Met Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower maken de Amerikaanse componisten en muzikanten Toshi Reagon en Bernice Johnson Reagon post-apocalyptisch muziektheater, dat tweehonderd jaar zwarte muziek omvat. De opera is gebaseerd op de sciencefictionromans van Octavia Butler.
Een jonge vrouw ontvlucht een buitenwijk van Los Angeles die onleefbaar is geworden; ongebreidelde privatisering, inkomensongelijkheid en klimaatverandering hebben geleid tot escalerend geweld. Terwijl ze door een uitgedroogd Amerikaans landschap reist, plant ze de zaadjes voor een nieuw geloof. Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower mengt elementen van sciencefiction en Afrikaans-Amerikaans spiritualisme en ontstijgt elk genre: het is actueel muziektheater over etniciteit, gender en de toekomst van de mensheid.
