Music between keys and bellows

The piano and accordion are both keyboard instruments that play chords, but they are otherwise completely different. The pianist makes music through the weight of a strike; the accordionist breathes life into the notes through the bellows. The accordion’s sound is capable of endless transformation. Petra Strahovnik uses this versatility in Crop Circle to evoke the mystery of crop circles: the mysticism of their appearance, the clarity of their form and the ambiguity of their origin. Nicoline Soeter also plays with the transformation of sound, with the accordion merging imperceptibly into the sound of the violin.

In contrast, the works of Vanessa Lann and Piet-Jan van Rossum utilize the clarity of the piano. In Arnica Cedar Lake, Van Rossum dreams of an imaginary lake; the music seeks ‘spiritual virtuosity’ rather than technical bravura. Lann’s Springs Eternal was inspired by Beethoven’s Spring Sonata.
