Scottish composer puts her own experimental twist on the Celtic tradition.

Brìghde Chaimbeul is a master of the Scottish smallpipes – the bellows-blown, mellower and more emotive cousin to the famous Highland bagpipes. She continues to delve deep into the world of interconnected piping traditions, while simultaneously developing her own 21st century approach. Ambient, avant-garde and electronic music influence her solo performances, with which she appeals to new and young audiences on forward-thinking festivals such as Rewire and Le Guess Who?

Last summer saw the release of her third album Sunwise, on which she collaborates with saxophone adventurer Colin Stetson. The album also features the voices of her father Aonghas Phàdraig Chaimbeul and her brother Eòsaph, who are native Gaelic speakers just like herself. Brìghde Chaimbeul grew up on the Isle of Skye. She has won many awards and has collaborated with artists from all kinds of genres, from avant-pop to folk and improvisation, including  Caroline Polachek, Gruff Rhys and Shahzad Ismaily.

Arresting, hypnotic compositions… with dissonance often stuttering next to moments of deep beauty. Both of its time and out of time.’ (The Guardian).
