Opening ‘Everything by Beethoven’ and a new composition by Thomas Beijer

This Cello Biënnale will see a performance of every cello and piano composition by Beethoven, spread out over four concerts. Everything by Beethoven will be opened by the acclaimed cello-piano duo Marie-Elisabeth Hecker and Martin Helmchen, who will perform Beethoven’s famous Sonata No. 3 and the Judas Maccabaeus Variations.

Thomas Beijer composed As two as one for cello and piano as a musical metaphor for a relationship: two voices reaching for one another, seeming to find each other, at times almost melting into one, but remaining two nonetheless. The Hungarian composer Sándor Veress is one of the lesser-known stars of the famed Hungarian 20th Century school of composers. He studied with Bartók and Kodály and was the teacher of Kurtág and Ligeti. His Sonata for cello solo easily competes with similar works by Kodály and Ligeti.

This concert is a part of Everything by Beethoven.
