Het Collectief

Modernist chamber music from a turbulent era

With a lively programme, Het Collectief dives into the Interwar years – a time of upheaval in both world politics and the arts. Four of the five pieces date back to the 1920s. The fifth, Stravinsky’s Septet from 1954, surprised friend and foe alike; in it, he revisited the twelve-tone technique developed by his great rival, Arnold Schönberg, during the 1920s. A rare highlight of the performance is the turbulent ballet Der Dämon, composed by a young Paul Hindemith.

Het Collectief is a regular fixture at the Muziekgebouw, with past performances featuring Reinbert de Leeuw and Collegium Vocale Gent. While the Second Viennese School (Schönberg, Berg, Webern) is one of their core specialties, the ensemble has a deep interest in music from the early 20th century. This evening, they perform in various formations, bringing to life the small-scale but grandly imagined works of the American George Antheil and the Czechs Leoš Janáček and Erwin Schulhoff. Expect an adventurous programme full of drive and the restless energy of a changing world.
