Following an impressive debut with Amsterdam Sinfonietta at the 2022 Cello Biennale Amsterdam, cellist Ivan Karizna returns to the ensemble. A laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, Karizna performs Shostakovich’s poignant Viola Sonata, in an arrangement for cello and strings. In this moving final work by Shostakovich, described by the composer himself as an ‘adagio in memory of Beethoven’, Karizna brings to life the delicate balance of fragility and strength found in a final goodbye.

Aria by Shostakovich’s friend and kindred spirit Mieczysław Weinberg is a small, deeply poetic jewel for string quartet that takes on an added radiance in this version for string orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings is a pinnacle of the Romantic repertoire and one of Amsterdam Sinfonietta’s signature pieces.
