50-year-old percussion ensemble celebrates Steve Reich’s 90th birthday

In the 2026/2027 season, percussion ensemble HIIIT celebrates a double milestone: 50 years as an ensemble and the 90th birthday of minimal music pioneer Steve Reich, a lifelong inspiration for the group. Dubbed ‘The impact = minimal’, this retrospective features the iconic Drumming: a pulsating sonic universe where rhythms slowly shift, patterns interlock, and time itself seems to disappear.

In addition, Aart Strootman presents his new work Strumming, composed specifically for HIIIT. Performed by an ensemble of single-stringed instruments assembled for this work, gentle harmonies and layered soundscapes unfold without a fixed pulse. Where Drumming sweeps you up with its hypnotic energy, Strumming invites quiet contemplation — an intensely physical, almost meditative concert experience.
