Trance-like minimal music for female voices and ensemble

Het Muziek presents an evening of authentic New York avant-garde, celebrating the influential legacy of minimal music. Born in the 1960s, minimalism is defined by constant repetition, shifting rhythms, and a process-driven approach to composition. Grandmaster Steve Reich and young star Missy Mazzoli showcase how different generations connect with this legacy through two monumental works for female voices and ensemble.

Tehillim (1981) marks the first work in which minimalist pioneer Reich addressed his Jewish roots. The four movements, set to psalm texts, create a dreamlike space in which rhythm and text take on a trance-like quality. Mazzoli, by contrast, replaced the traditional prayers of the vespers with Matthew Zapruder’s contemporary poetry. Blending breath-taking vocals and electronic interludes, Vespers for a New Dark Age (2014) is an enchanting exploration of human fragility in a high-tech world.
