Delusion of the Fury

‘Een ritueel van dromen en zinsbegoocheling’ is de ondertitel van Harry Partch’ Delusion of the Fury – en daar is niets teveel mee gezegd. Met een wonderlijke verzameling zelfgebouwde instrumenten creëerde de excentriekste van alle Amerikaanse componisten een serie soundscapes die een Japans spookverhaal over een moordenaar en de geest van zijn slachtoffer vermengt met een Afrikaanse komedie over een herder en een dove zwerver.

43 jaar na de première heeft regisseur Heiner Goebbels het stuk voor de eerste keer naar Europa gehaald. Daarvoor werden de instrumenten exact nagebouwd en moesten de uitvoerenden maandenlang studeren om ze te leren bespelen. Maar dan heb je ook wat: een muziektheatraal werk dat niet anders omschreven kan worden dan ‘out of this world’. 
 

'A Ritual of Dream and Delusion' is the subtitle of Harry Partch's Delusion of the Fury – and that is exactly what it is. With a bizarre array of self-built instruments the most eccentric of all American composers created a series of soundscapes which blend a Japanese ghost story of a murderer who confronts ghost of his victim with an African comedy involving a goatherd and a deaf tramp.

43 years after its premiere, director Heiner Goebbels has brought the piece to Europe for the first time ever. This has meant that the instruments have had to be rebuilt to spec and that the performers have had to rehearse for months to learn to play them. The result, however, is spectacular: a piece of music theatre that can only be described as 'out of this world'.
