De jonge Berlijnse strijkers van Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop hebben een reputatie opgebouwd met grensverleggende concerten. Voor dit concert onder leiding van André de Ridder is gitarist Lee Ranaldo te gast: medeoprichter van noise-rockband Sonic Youth en volgens velen een unieke gitarist.

Ranaldo speelt en zingt mee in zijn nieuwe compositie waarin het ensemble wordt opgedeeld in kleinere solistengroepen, een principe dat al gebruikt werd in de barok, bijvoorbeeld in Charles Avisons Concerto grosso nr. 3 (1744) dat ook wordt gespeeld. Verder klinken het compromisloze Licht a capella van de Berlijnse componist Sebastian Claren en het wervelende, verontrustende Fuel van de New Yorkse componiste Julia Wolfe en videokunstenaar Bill Morrison.

After the performance: Meet the artist with André de Ridder, Lee Ranaldo and  members of Kaleidoskop

The Berlin string ensemble Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop have built themselves a reputation as pioneers on the concert stage. For this performance conducted by André de Ridder, they are joined by special guest guitarist Lee Ranaldo. Co-founder of noise rock band Sonic Youth and, according to many, a truly unique guitar player.

Here he performs a new score of his, playing and singing along with the ensemble. New song material will be woven into a structure of a more abstract piece reflecting on the approach of baroque soloist ensembles typical for Kaleidoskop and also evident in Charles Avison’s Concerto grosso No. 3 (1744), which is programmed alongside the uncompromising Licht a capella by the Berlin composer Sebastian Claren and the thrilling and alarming Fuel by New York composer Julia Wolfe and video artist Bill Morrison.
