24 liederen, 24 films. De Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar William Kentridge, publieksfavoriet van het festival in 2012, geeft Franz Schuberts monumentale liederencyclus Winterreise een nieuwe dimensie met zijn kenmerkende collages en in houtskool getekende animaties.
De liederen vertellen het verhaal van een jonge dichter die, afgewezen door zijn geliefde, van wanhoop vervuld door een nachtelijk winters landschap doolt. Net als de liederen drukt het werk van Kentridge vaak een onbestemd gevoel uit. Zijn films vormen een poëtische, visuele tegenstem bij de vertolking door Matthias Goerne, een van de bekendste hedendaagse Schubertvertolkers, en pianist Markus Hinterhäuser. ‘Opdat beeld en geluid elkaar zo bevruchten dat er nieuwe inzichten ontstaan,’ aldus Kentridge.
24 songs, 24 films. The South-African artist William Kentridge, audience favourite at the festival in 2012, lends Franz Schubert’s monumental song cycle Winterreise a new dimension with his specific brand of collages and charcoal animations.
Schubert’s songs tell the story of a young poet who has been rejected by his love and wanders desolately through a wintry landscape at night. Like the songs, Kentridge’s work often expresses a mysterious sense of melancholy. His films serve as a poetic, visual counterpart to the interpretation by Matthias Goerne, one of the most famous contemporary singers of Schubert’s Lieder, and pianist Markus Hinterhäuser. ‘In the hope that picture and sound will combine to create new insights,’ as Kentridge explained.
