A musical deep-dive into Murnau’s masterpiece

Olga Pashchenko’s versatile talent is a regular highlight at the Muziekgebouw. In a recurring collaboration with curator and performance specialist Jed Wentz, she previously played new piano scores for Nosferatu, The Last Laugh and Tartuffe by the influential film director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. They continue the series with Murnau’s film adaptation of Faust; this year marks the 100th anniversary of the film’s release.

The legend of the alchemist who strikes a desperate bargain with the devil takes on epic proportions on the silver screen, thanks to ingenious special effects and the casting of two acting powerhouses: Gösta Ekman in the title role and Emil Jannings as the diabolical Mephisto. A compilation of piano pieces from various periods, synchronized with the film scenes, completes the immersive experience.
