With The Phantom of the Opera (1925), a cinematic landmark returns to the big screen. Alexandre Tharaud provides a live improvised piano accompaniment to Rupert Julian’s adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s novel. Actor Lon Chaney delivered an iconic performance as the Phantom, turning the film into a sensation with his groundbreaking makeup.
For Tharaud, film is no mere side project. In his younger years, he earned his spurs as a cinema pianist, improvising live for silent films. He brought that experience to previous film projects at the Muziekgebouw, such as Orlac’s Hände and Sunrise. His 2022 album Cinema is a testament to this ongoing love affair with film.
