A fiery musical journey through the lands of the Mediterranean

What happens when musicians from various Mediterranean countries immerse one another in their centuries-old musical traditions? The Flamenco Biennale and the Cello Biennale bring musicians from the Mediterranean region together. Giovanni Sollima (Sicily) and Maya Fridman meet Cretan lyra player Kelly Thoma and Spanish flamenco guitarist Dani de Morón. This magnificent triad is further enriched by the rhythmic Greek and Spanish feet of Thanasis Mavrokostas and Luz Arcas. Renowned percussionist Agustín Diassera connects these musical worlds with his subtle percussive rhythms.

Ships brought more than just trade goods to the countries on the Mediterranean coast; they carried centuries-old musical traditions across the waves. The musical styles of countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain are related through their virtuosity and joy of performance, yet they remain distinctly different. At the heart of this Greek-Italian-Spanish triad is the lyra – the pear-shaped Cretan instrument which is played on the knee – a descendant of the classical Byzantine lyra.
