An exuberant premiere and a dazzling ode to the big band

In the line-up of top ensembles performing the state of the art in modern composition during the Thursday Night Series, the German Ensemble Modern is a regular. Under the baton of Enno Poppe, they will present the Dutch premiere of work by rising star Alex Paxton, recipient of the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize. Poppe will also conduct Körper, his own dazzling ode to Ensemble Modern and big band music.

Wherever Alex Paxton’s music is played, it garners rave reviews that celebrate its vibrant quality. ‘This is the most joyous sound I’ve heard in ages!’ wrote The New York Times about the music of this ‘sound magician’. And even though the heyday of the classic big band is almost a century behind us, this powerful ensemble prompted Enno Poppe to utilize countless new sound combinations to great effect.
