Intimate cantatas about heartbroken shepherds

Never did nymphs and shepherds grieve as beautifully as in Alessandro Scarlatti’s pastoral cantatas: jewels of musical and theatrical ingenuity. The Belgian ensemble Scherzi Musicali brings this rural heartache to life, using two voices and an instrumental combo to infuse every aria and recitative with vibrant colour. Poetry, rhetoric, delicate ornamentation, and an overwhelming richness of sound reign in these intimate cantatas. They prove once and for all that Scarlatti Senior didn’t need an opera stage to be a master of drama. 
 
In the fifteen-plus years since its inception, Scherzi Musicali has established itself as a leading ensemble in the world of early music, exploring 17th- and 18th-century repertoire with unquenchable joy. The ensemble’s discography features numerous world premieres, with recordings that have earned widespread international acclaim and prestigious awards, including the Diapason d’or.
