Romanticism embraces modernism

A concert is a celebration, and a concert with a friend is an even greater celebration. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard brings his friend Thomas Zehetmair along. He is a remarkable man: a prominent violinist and conductor. Their programme is full of contrasts, framed by two of Robert Schumann’s romantic violin sonatas, with the modernists Arnold Schönberg and Elliott Carter in between.

Aimard has a soft spot for the American Carter. Carter’s Duo derives its character and expression from the contrast between violin and piano. Schoenberg’s Phantasy for violin and piano is a playful, whimsical work full of unexpected turns, in which lyricism and incisiveness constantly challenge each other. Schumann plays with his two inner archetypes, Florestan (driven, impetuous) and Eusebius (dreamy, introverted) – mirrors of his soul. Both sonatas are characterised by a restless expression.
