An evening filled with musical discoveries

There is much to discover this evening. At the heart of the programme is Elliott Carter’s rarely heard Double Concerto, a fascinating work in which the piano and harpsichord each lead their own ensemble. Framing it is fresh repertoire: Rebecca Saunders’ All that Dust for string quintet and solo percussion, and a brand-new work by Mathias Spahlinger which is having its world premiere tonight.

Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, this season’s ‘artist in focus’ at the Muziekgebouw, will perform the programme together with Ensemble Musikfabrik, one of Europe’s leading new-music ensembles, under the baton of Bas Wiegers. Aimard, who trained in the circle around Pierre Boulez and the Ensemble intercontemporain, has been one of the foremost advocates of contemporary music for decades. In Carter’s multi-layered Double Concerto, these influences come together: two ensembles, two soloists and a fascinating interplay of collaboration and contrast.
