An ode to summer in 31 notes

An ode to spring and summer in 31 tones: the unconventional organist Una Cintina returns to the Fokker organ with a warm-blooded programme centred around the oldest known polyphonic music in the world, the medieval canon Sumer is icumen in. In the 1970s, the Danish composer Ole Buck used this centuries-old theme to craft a hypnotic work for organ. Following the canon, Cintina will perform free improvisations on the 31-tone console. Badings’ Archifonica and a new work by the Latvian composer Madara Pētersone round off this summer dish.

Born into a musical family in Latvia, Una Cintiņa started with the piano before going on to study church music, conducting and organ. In 2007, she came to the Netherlands where she continued her studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. She is currently the musical director and organist of the Roman Catholic parish HH Matthias-Laurentius in Alkmaar. She is a champion of contemporary music, with a particular focus on Latvian organ music.
