Sensational vocal artist brings stories from different cultures to life

I spy with my little eye, and what I see is… A different world. Vocal artist and live sensation Elaine Mitchener has curated an evening for the New European Ensemble filled with visions from diverse eras and cultures. The programme features renowned composers like Sofia Gubaidulina, alongside emerging talents from South Korea and South Africa. To British-Caribbean artist Elaine Mitchener, music is inseparable from performance, movement and the visual arts. With her background in gospel, classical vocal training and an affinity for both avant-garde and folk music, Mitchener represents a one-of-a-kind creative energy: you have to be there to experience it.

The New European Ensemble has made a name for itself with innovative programmes and interdisciplinary projects. Together with Mitchener, the ensemble brings to life a collection of highly diverse voices and stories, ranging from the activist minimalist Julius Eastman to the Italian sound magician Salvatore Sciarrino. Pulitzer Prize winner Raven Chacon draws inspiration from his Navajo heritage, while Bolivian composer Canela Palacios explores depth through the sounds of toys.
