Exceptional musicians unite Arab and Western traditions

The Cello Biennale Amsterdam and the Ud Festival are teaming up for a special programme centred on two extraordinary musicians who masterfully bridge Arabic and Western traditions. Moroccan-Canadian cellist Anwar Saidi is among the few artists equally at home in both Arabic modal systems and the Western classical tradition. Nazih Borish* is an oud virtuoso of international stature.

Borish created his own style by applying jazz, flamenco and Indian techniques to the oud. After founding a school in Syria where he trained dozens of students, he moved to Montreal in 2016. From there, he continues to create new compositions and engage in diverse musical collaborations.

* Shortly after the brochure was published, we received the sad news that Nazih Borish had passed away unexpectedly. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones. As soon as there is clarity about how the programme will continue, we will share it here.
