Inga Copeland (Lolina) + Acolytes

Of Alina Astrova nu deel uitmaakt van een lange traditie van ongrijpbare artiesten, of een exponent is van het internet waar bijnamen en aliassen makkelijk vervangen worden, is nog niet duidelijk. Wel is duidelijk dat, ongeacht haar aliassen Hype Williams (met Dean Blunt), Inga Copeland, copeland of meer recentelijk Lolina, haar producties zich hebben ontwikkeld tot een eigen esthetiek. Moeilijke, dissonante elementen dienen als katalysator voor composities die met tegenzin veranderen in melodieën, aangevuld met zwoele vocalen en vleugjes piano-dancehall. Het is avant-garde zonder elitair te zijn.

Haar muziek valt altijd buiten genres, maar ook buiten de industrie: al het Lolinamateriaal geeft zij zelf uit. De opvolger van het verdeelde maar verleidelijke EP RELAXIN’ with Lolina is een verontrustende verzameling tracks getiteld Live in Paris. Het album werd aanvankelijk uitgebracht als een video van een live optreden met Monopoly-achtige visuals en teksten die als kritiek op het kapitalisme gezien kunnen worden. Voorzichtigheid geboden.

Minimal avant pop of uncertain origins

Whether Alina Astrova is part of a long and select tradition of elusive artists or merely an exponent of the internet where aliases are easily discarded, is still to be decided. No matter the alias - Hype Williams (with Dean Blunt), Inga Copeland, copeland, or more recently Lolina, her productions have developed a distinct aesthetic: difficult, dissonant elements serve as catalysts for compositions that reluctantly (d)evolve in melody and, occasionally, sultry vocals and even dancehall piano. It’s avantgarde but without the elitist factor.

Her music falls strictly in between genres but also outside the industry - both Lolina materials to date have been self-released. She has followed up the discordant yet seductive EP, RELAXIN’ with Lolina, with a disconcerting collection of tracks entitled Live in Paris. The latter was first released as a video recording of a live performance featuring Monopoly-inspired visuals which, paired with some of her lyrics, could almost be construed as a critique of capitalism. Almost. Consume with caution.
