An ominous vision of the year 2026

The hundred-year-old, monumental science-fiction epic Metropolis presents us with a dystopian world set in the year 2026 (!). In this vision, an elite class has entrenched itself within a hyper-modern city, kept running by the sweat and blood of an oppressed working class. The sheer scale of the production, with spectacular sets, enchanting special effects and an army of extras, made it the most expensive film of its time.

This vision of a society in which technology is a tool for control, influenced modern classics such as Blade Runner and The Matrix. Vocal quintet Wishful Singing brings that same theme to the modern stage. Their voices blend with a futuristic live score by Steven Kamperman, who previously composed soulful music for Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed.
