A vibrant and moving Latin American Christmas

When it comes to capturing the true essence of the Misa Criolla, Música Temprana stands unrivalled. Renowned worldwide for their acclaimed performances, this ensemble is the gold standard for performing Ramírez’s iconic masterpiece. Argentine folk music, pulsating rhythms and age-old devotion merge into an uplifting and deeply moving mass. The villancicos, traditional Spanish-language Christmas carols, also draw on ancient musical and cultural traditions and showcase the lively religious folk culture found in Latin American history.

The Misa Criolla is a masterpiece by composer Ariel Ramírez. He wrote the work in 1964 for two German nuns who had once given him shelter. The Vatican’s permission to use vernacular mass settings inspired him to create this vibrant work, in which the Spanish language and Latin American folk music take centre stage. The mass blossomed into a celebration of life, now performed worldwide during Christmas festivities.
