Arabic folk hero blends poetry, tradition and current affairs

Marcel Khalife is a folk hero in the Arab world, hailed as the Bob Dylan of the Middle East. This is due to his poetic lyrics, which address themes such as loss, resistance and longing. The legendary Lebanese singer and oud virtuoso blends tradition with contemporary compositions, accompanied by his son Rami Khalife on piano and nephew Sary Khalife on cello.

Marcel Khalife graduated from the Beirut Conservatory in 1971. His music was strongly influenced by what was happening in his country at the time, such as the influx of Palestinian refugees and the outbreak of civil war. His music, set to lyrics by Mahmoud Darwish, widely regarded as the most important Palestinian poet, is still relevant today.
