Gentle Confrontation

Met Gentle Confrontation, haar derde album op het iconische Britse label Hyperdub, onthult Loraine James een nieuw deel van haar persoonlijke wereld, die zo hecht verbonden is met haar muziek. Dit is de plaat die Loraine als tiener had willen maken en de klank verwijst dan ook naar de muziek uit die tijd. Haar eerdere Hyperdub-albums For You & I en Reflections werden geroemd om hun treffende weergave van haar realiteit als onafhankelijke, zwarte, Britse queer-kunstenaar.

Loraine James groeide op in het iconische Alma Estate in Enfield, Noord-Londen, waar ze omringd werd door vele parallelle culturen. Als tiener leerde ze pianospelen en ging ze vaak naar emo-, pop- en mathrock-concerten, waarna ze zichzelf elektronische muziek leerde produceren met MIDI-keyboard en laptop. In haar thuisstudio verwerkte ze al haar invloeden tot een eigen geluid. Geleidelijk aan ontwikkelde ze een unieke, herkenbare signatuur.

Chanel Beads
Het voorprogramma Chanel Beads ontstond als een platform voor Shane Lavers om zijn voice memo's, collages en experimenten in songwriting te organiseren. Na in diverse formaties huisoptredens te hebben gegeven in Seattle, verhuisden Lavers en zijn samenwerkingspartner Maya McGrory naar New York. In hun muziek combineren zij synthesizers met akoestische instrumenten in een streven naar een tijdloos geluid. Hun muziek probeert die vluchtige momenten van openbaring waarop alles samenvalt en volkomen logisch is, te vangen. 

Pebblle (dj)
Van shoegaze en krautrock tot eigenzinnige elektronica en onnavolgbare IDM, en dan linea recta naar vervormde breaks, noise en nightcore: de mixes van Pebblle voelen even speels en intiem als plagend en ongrijpbaar. Met een specifieke esthetiek zich situerend rond het einde van de jaren negentig, die ergens aan de klanken van µ-Ziq en Oli XL doet denken, schept Pebblle haar eigen muzikale speeltuin.

With Gentle Confrontation, her third album for the iconic British label Hyperdub, Loraine James lets us into a new chapter of her real and sonic life in which she examines her past and present. She says this is the record a teenage Loraine would like to have made, the album's musical tendencies reflect that time too. Her previous Hyperdub albums For You & I and Reflection were praised for their vital narratives that accurately portrayed her reality as an independent queer, Black, British artist. 

Growing up on Enfield's iconic Alma Estate in North London, Loraine James was surrounded by a plethora of parallel cultures. She learned to play the piano as a teenager, frequenting emo, pop and math rock shows before teaching herself electronic music production with a MIDI keyboard and a laptop. In her low-key home studio, James channelled her wide range of interests into a personal sound that evolved into an identifiable signature.

Chanel Beads
Chanel Beads, the support act, emerged as a platform for Shane Lavers to organize his voice memos, collages, and experiments in songwriting. After playing house shows in various formations around Seattle, Shane and his collaborator Maya McGrory relocated to New York. Their music combines real and synthetic instrumentation, blurring the lines of genre in pursuit of a timeless sound. Inspired by fleeting moments of revelation, their music seeks to capture those instances when everything aligns and makes perfect sense.

From shoegaze and krautrock to quirky electro and incomprehensible IDM, and then straight into distorted breaks, noise, and nightcore: Pebblle's mixes feel as playful and intimate as they are teasing and elusive. Embracing a specific aesthetic reminiscent of the late nineties, somewhere between the sounds of µ-Ziq and Oli XL, Pebblle creates her own musical playground.
