Minimal Music Festival 2026

Minimal Music Festival

April 16 - 19, 2026 / Four days of hypnotizing minimal

Repetition becomes trance, sound becomes space, time fades. For four days, music unfolds as a physical, transcendental experience in the ninth edition of the Minimal Music Festival. What inspired pioneers like LaMonte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich resonates in the wealth of sounds and styles of adventurous makers.

Step into Phase to Phase, a new interactive installation by music technologist and composer Görkem Arikan, developed with the SoundLAB of the Muziekgebouw. During the Minimal Music Festival, the installation is free for all visitors — a playful minimal sound playground where you decide how the music takes shape.

In Phase to Phase, you make the music. Record short sounds — a rhythm, a melody, a click, a vocal fragment, anything you invent on the spot. Your recording becomes the raw material for the phasing machine, which repeats and shifts your sound so that it gradually drifts apart. From one simple gesture, a constantly evolving, rhythmic minimal soundscape unfolds.

The installation is inspired by the principle of phasing, known from the music of Steve Reich. In works such as It’s Gonna Rain, Piano Phase and Clapping Music, identical patterns are played simultaneously at slightly different speeds. That tiny rhythmic difference creates a hypnotic, shifting landscape of sound — exactly the phenomenon you can create yourself in Phase to Phase.

One sound becomes a complete, shifting minimal composition.
